ANGOLA, IN – The Calvin College women’s soccer team traveled to Trine University in search of a second straight conference win. Calvin (8-3-0, 7-2-0 MIAA) defeated Trine (1-10-2, 0-8-1 MIAA) 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights put the pressure on the Thunder from the opening kickoff. In the ninth minute, senior Liz Cancel (St. Clair Shores/Fraser) found the wood work with a shot. A minute later, fellow senior Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South) had a shot saved by Trine keeper Sloan Davis. Calvin was not to be denied. In the 12th minute, freshmen Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) broke through the Thunder defense on the left side, and sent a cross into the box. Freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian) shot from the 6-yeard box into the net, giving Calvin a 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting Trine 11-3 in the first half, Calvin could not net another goal.
As the second half began, the Knights’ pressure resumed. Their first six shots of the half were saved by Davis. The seventh, however, found the back of the net. Again it was Ten Harmsel, scoring her fifth goal of the season off of a cross from Smith. Calvin would add another goal in the 87th minute, coming from junior Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt), wrapping up Calvin’s 3-0 victory.
Calvin outshot Trine 26-3 in the contest. The Knights also had eight corner kicks to the Thunder’s two. Calvin junior keeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern) earned the victory. Sloan Davis ended the game with a career high 16 saves.
“We continue to get better as a team on the road,” Calvin head coach Mark Recker said. “It is encouraging to see our level of play increase with each game.”
With Alma drawing at Adrian, and Kalamazoo tying Hope, Calvin moved into a tie for first place in the MIAA with Saint Mary’s.
Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Alma Scots at noon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
