After an early conference season loss to the Scots of Alma, the women’s soccer team has been rolling as of late, winning three straight contests while outscoring it’s opponents 11-0. The Knights looked to continue that streak when it hosted the Adrian Bulldogs at Zuidema Field. Calvin, scoring three first half goals, did just that as it bottled up last year’s MIAA MVP Sam Barker and the Adrian offense en route to a 3-1 win.
Calvin played strong from the opening kick, looking patient on the ball and connecting on the majority of its passes. This resulted in a number of opportunities for freshman Paige Capel, who made great runs up the sideline and into the Bulldogs’ box. Although Capel could not capitalize on these early opportunities, it was the freshman that put the Knights on the board in the 11th minute.
On a corner kick from freshman Sydney Kinney, Capel set herself up at the near post and headed the ball into the net for her fourth goal of the season to put the Knights up 1-0.
In the 28th minute, Calvin added another goal off a corner kick, this by junior Danielle Carter. This time it was junior Kelly Koets who sent the ball into the box, and with three Knights standing near the back post, found Carter who tapped it in to put Calvin’s advantage at 2-0.
Just over ten minutes later, in the 39th minute, the Knights pushed their lead to 3-0 as freshman Jaime Verbal connected with freshman Abigail Ploeg on a through ball into the Adrian box. Ploeg then touched the ball far post past the Bulldogs keeper to send the Knights into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
In the second half, Adrian looked to chip away at the Calvin lead led by Barker. In the opening minutes of the second half, Barker had a great shot on net that hit the crossbar, keeping the Calvin lead at three. But, in the 63rd minute, Barker found teammate Erin Weide who put the ball into the net to cut Calvin’s advantage to 3-1.
This is as close as the Bulldogs would come, however, as the Knights shut down the Adrian offense the rest of the game and earned the 3-1 victory.
Calvin built a 22-13 shots advantage and an 8-1 corner advantage throughout the game. Earning the victory in net for the Knights was junior Ashton Hearn, who made five saves.
“Today, I encouraged the team to be aggressive and be effective. We got the two corner kick goals, so today was a huge day in that regard that special plays ended up putting us up,” said head coach Mark Recker.
The win moves Calvin to 5-1 in conference and 6-2 overall. Adrian drops to 3-2-1 in the MIAA and 6-2-1 overall. The Knights now look forward to Wednesday when they will travel to Holland to face Hope. The Flying Dutch currently sit at 4-2 in MIAA-play and 7-3 overall.
