On a cool and dreary October afternoon, the Calvin women’s soccer team looked to cool off MIAA-leading Adrian as it played host to the Bulldogs. In conditions that would usually dictate a slower-playing pace, the Knights and Bulldogs ended up battling in a shootout with the Bulldogs prevailing 4-3.
Adrian would strike first as in the 19th minute freshmen midfielder Becky Reynolds would receive a cross in the middle of the box and put it past Calvin keeper Ashton Hearn for the 1-0 advantage. Less than ten minutes later, Reynolds would strike again for the Bulldogs, this off another cross as she pushed Adrian’s lead to 2-0. The Knights would not give up, however, as they responded just four minutes after Reynold’s second goal.
Some great passing in the midfield found sophomore Heidi Scholten with the ball at the top of the Bulldogs penalty box. Scholten then slotted a through ball to sophomore Paige Rindels who slipped behind the defense and shot the ball past Adrian junior keeper Chayna Wallace to cut the Bulldog’s lead to 2-1. Both teams continued to fight through the final minutes of the first half, but the score would remain 2-1 at the break.
Both teams would continue shooting out of the break, with a great Calvin chance coming in the 53rd minute as Liz Cancel put a shot on net that was pushed wide by the keeper. The Bulldogs had a great chance of their own ten minutes later as an Adrian shot forced keeper Ashton Hearn into punching the ball over the crossbar. The ensuing corner kick, taken by Adrian junior Patti Vaassen, was put right at the front post of the net and deflected in to give Adrian the 3-1 lead.
The Knights would continue to fight back, and, with 20:53 left on the clock, would trim the lead back down to one. Freshmen Sam Osterhaven was able to break free in the opponent’s box where she crossed the ball to junior Liz Cancel who put it into the back of the net.
Unfortunately for the Knights, the Bulldogs were able to respond five minutes later. A foul in the Calvin penalty box awarded Adrian a penalty kick. The shot was put past a diving Ashton Hearn, and Adrian would once again take the two goal, with the score now at 4-2.
Refusing to give up, the Knights would once again cut the lead to one, this time on another Liz Cancel goal, her second of the game, with 7:44 remaining. Adrian would hold the 4-3 advantage for the rest of the contest however, remaining on top of the MIAA with the win. The Knights, now 7-5 in conference and 7-9 overall, hold on to fifth place in the MIAA.
“This is a team that’s not going to quit on anyone,” said Head Coach Mark Recker. “You want the urgency and passion and desire to not fall behind, but that’s the tenacity you are asking a young team to grow and develop. I was really pleased that we didn’t quit today. We scored three quality goals, we just have to keep setting it on frame.”
The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they travel to St. Mary’s to face the Belles with the game scheduled to start at noon.
