After struggling to score in recent games, the Knights responded with a 6-0 victory over Adrian on Saturday.

The Knights opened the game with intensity, peppering the net with shots in the first three minutes.  Then Carly Prins scored on an unassisted effort, putting the Knights on the board less than two and a half minutes into the game.

Calvin continued to dominate possession throughout the half, but only regained the goal-scoring spark just before the end of the first half.  On a charging run down the left wing, Kellie Honderd put a shot past the keeper to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

Then as the final ticks of the first half ran off the clock, senior Lauren Heyboer played an arching cross into the box, where Carly Prins directed a header to the far post in the bottom right corner.  This goal propelled Calvin to a 3-0 lead with just three seconds remaining in the half.

The Knights didn’t stop there, freshman Brittany Hieftje scored on a header less than 40 seconds into the second half.  The goal was assisted by fellow freshman Elizabeth Drennan, who finished the game with two assists, the other in the 68th minute to Paige Rindels.  In the 77th minute, Carly Prins drove a shot into the net, earning herself a hat trick and giving Calvin a 6-0 lead.

The Knights were also impressive in the back, holding Adrian without a shot until the final seconds of the game.

Coach Mark Recker said of the game, “Today was a connecting point.  We were motivated and finally found our belief in each other.  We were able to execute when the opportunities were there.”
Carly Prins, echoed those sentiments, “This is the kind of play we need.  This signifies that we’re ready to go.”
