The Calvin College women’s lacrosse team hosted the Loras College Duhawks on a beautiful Thursday afternoon for its first varsity lacrosse held on Calvin’s campus at Zuidema Field. The Knights took a commanding lead early, scored five goals in the opening five minutes en route to a 20-1 victory.
Senior Nicole Perragaux began the scoring less than a minute into the game.
The Knights were dominant in the midfield early on, forcing the Duhawks into a number of turnovers and keeping the ball in the offensive zone. This led to a 7-0 Calvin advantage with 18:37 remaining in the first half.
At halftime, the Knights led 8-0. Perragaux, junior Michelle Holwerda, and freshman Carolyn Forbes all had two first half goals for Calvin.
Out of the break, the Knights continued their strong attack and extended their unanswered scoring streak up until 14-0 before Loras scored its first goal to bring the score to 14-1. Calvin then added six more goals over the final 13 minutes to bring the final score to 20-1.
The Knights outshot the Duhawks 48-3 in the contest.
Forbes and Holwerda each scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Knights. Perragaux added three goals while sophomore Lissa Busscher and junior Mary Hoogstra chipped in two apiece. Five Knights tied with four groundballs in the contest. Kaitlyn Kutsch scored the lone goal for Loras, while goalkeeper Sam Schmidt made 12 saves for the Duhawks.
“I think we had a lot of good offensive looks today,” said head coach Blake Boehm. “A lot of what we’ve been working on is high percentage shots, and at halftime, I talked about putting more shots on goal and putting them in the corners, and we came out and did that in the second half. Defensively we played really strong and caused a lot of turnovers. We’re making some strides in the right direction and that will prepare us well for the MIAA competition.”
Calvin improves to 2-6 on the season while Loras drops to 0-6. The Knights now look forward to next week Saturday when they will travel to Adrian for their first match of conference play. The game against the Bulldogs is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
