The Calvin women’s lacrosse team hosted the Comets of Olivet on Saturday afternoon, which also happened to be Calvin’s final regular season game and senior day for the Knights. The first senior class of women’s varsity lacrosse is attacker Nicole Perragaux, midfielder Yelena Davis, and goalkeeper Lauren Spoelstra. The Knights were able to win on senior day, building a 4-0 lead by halftime en route to a 10-1 victory.
Freshman Sierra Slaughter scored the first two goals of the game for the Knights, both unassisted. Junior Christina Howell added a goal with 13:56 remaining to extend the Calvin lead to 3-0. Yelena Davis scored less than a minute and a half later to bring the score to 4-0, which the teams brought into halftime.
Out of the break, Calvin scored four more goals before the Comets tallied their first, with sophomore Nikita Blaauwendraat, junior Michelle Holwerda, Perragaux, and freshman Carolyn Forbes each finding the back of the net to push the Knights advantage to 8-0. Geri Merrell then score for Olivet to bring the score to 8-1.
Calvin then rounded out the scoring as sophomore Lissa Busscher and Perragaux scored to bring the final score to 10-1.
Slaughter led the Knights with two goals and an assist. Perragux chipped in two goals while Holwerda added one goal and an assist. In goal, Lauren Spoelstra made five saves to earn the win.Geri Merrell scored the lone goal for the Comets.
“Our seniors played well today, and that was an added benefit, for them to come out on senior day and play the way they did,” said head coach Blake Boehm. “We’ve been saying all year that it is about winning the 50-50 balls and winning the middle of the field, and we came out and did that today.”
The win ends the inaugural Calvin women’s lacrosse varsity season. Calvin’s final record is 4-12 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA, tied for fourth in conference. Olivet drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference.
