Women’s golf team takes second place at MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma

ALMA - The Calvin women’s golf season just keeps getting better and better. On Saturday, the Knights posted a school record score of 335 strokes in taking second place at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club.

On Thursday, Calvin posted a school record score of 338 strokes in taking third at a league tournament. Saturday’s score was not only good for second place but also moved Calvin within one stroke of second place in the overall league standings.

Junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin on Saturday with a round of 80 that was good for third place individually. She was followed closely by senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who carded a round of 83 that was good for a tie for sixth place Saturday. Freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with a collegiate-best score of 84.

Rounding out Calvin’s lineup were freshman Casey Harkema (Holt, MI/Holt HS) with an 88 and senior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) with a 90.

Competing individually for Calvin as alternates were freshman Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids, MI/Big Rapids HS) with a 93, freshman Sarah Arendsen (Wayland, MI/Wayland HS) with a 96 and freshman Jeryl Schudel (Adrian, MI/Joy of Knowledge Tutorial) with a 114.

Theresa Damico of Olivet was the tournament medalist on Saturday with a round of 76. Olivet took first place as a team with a score of 320 strokes. Hope was third at 336 and Saint Mary’s fourth at 340.

Calvin is back in action on September 26 when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s College.
