Women’s Golf In Sixth Place Through Day One of MIAA Tournament

BATTLE CREEK - Led by a stellar one-two punch of sophomore Elise Doezema and freshman Carlia Canto, the Calvin women’s golf team is in sixth place through one day of competition at the 36-hole MIAA Tournament being held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Calvin recorded a team score of 370 on Friday, good for sixth place through 18 holes of play. The Knights are just five strokes behind fourth place Adrian and Trine (365) at the tournament. Calvin also moved past Alma and into seventh place in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights finished 25 strokes ahead of Alma on Friday and are now 14 strokes ahead of the Scots in the overall standings.
Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) both had standout afternoons with Doezema firing a collegiate best round of 81 that has her tied for fifth place individually while Canto had an 82 that has her tied for seventh place. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were freshman Ashley Tiefenthal (Manistee/Manistee HS) with a 101, sophomore Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) with a 106 and freshman Melissa Shepard (Lowell/Lowell HS) with a 109.
