Saturday, October 12, 2013
BATTLE CREEK – For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women’s golf team is headed to the MIAA Spring Tournament. Calvin finished fourth at the two-day, 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament on Saturday but also placed third in the final league standings – its highest regular season league finish in school history.
Calvin posted a two-day team total of 679 strokes at the weekend tournament, hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley country Club. Calvin shot 341 on Friday and came back with a score of 338 on Saturday to finish three strokes behind Trine over the weekend. The Knights did finish 27 strokes ahead of Trine in the overall MIAA fall standings however.
Olivet took first at the weekend tournament and also won the MIAA regular season title. Saint Mary’s took second at the tournament and second in the final league standings. The MIAA Spring Tournament determines the MIAA’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament. As regular season champion, Olivet will host the final two rounds of the spring tournament with Saint Mary’s hosting the first 18-hole round.
With a weekend total of 679, the Knights finish the MIAA fall season with a season team scoring average of 344.0 per round, just one stroke behind the school-record pace set by Calvin’s 2012 team.
Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) capped off her fall season in style, sharing weekend medalist honors with a two-day total of 152 (73-79) to tie Olivet’s Adrienne Plourde for first place at the tournament. Canto finished second in the final MIAA individual standings with a season average of 78.5 strokes-per-round. The average is a new Calvin single-season record. For her efforts, Canto earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year.
Calvin also landed two players on the All-MIAA second team as sophomores Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) and Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) were so honored. Harkema had a weekend total of 180 (95-85) and finished tied for 12th in the final MIAA individual standings (86.7). Poole also tied for 12th (86.7) and shot a weekend total of 170 (85-85).
Sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) shot a weekend score of 177 (88-89) and sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) a weekend total of 198 (101-97).
