SOUTH BEND, IN – The Calvin women’s golf team solidified its spot for fifth place in the MIAA standings with a fifth place team score of 358 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s on Saturday at the Blackthorn Golf Club.
The team score by the Knights is the second-best at an 18-hole league event in Calvin women’s golf history, surpassed only by a team score of 356 recorded at 2004 MIAA Jamboree held at Trine’s Zollner Golf Club.
Calvin has now posted two of the top three team scores in school history (at a league event) this year. Two weeks ago, Calvin recorded a team score of 362 at a league outing hosted by Hope at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club.
Calvin was led on Saturday by senior Julienne Louters (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who fired a career-best score of 88 to finish in a tie for 18th place individually.
Seniors Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) along with freshman Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were all close behind with rounds of 90 that left them tied for 27th.
Senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) rounded out Calvin finishers with a score of 103.
Host Saint Mary’s took first place on Saturday with a score of 327 with Olivet second at 329 and Hope third at 331.
Megan Scholten of Hope was Saturday’s medalist with a score of 77.
Saint Mary’s leads the overall standings by 17 strokes with Olivet second. Calvin now holds a 22-stroke lead over Albion for fifth place with 36 holes left to play.
The final 36 holes of league competition will take place next Friday and Saturday at the MIAA Tournament to be held at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
