TERRE HAUTE, IN—The Calvin women’s track and field team made history on Friday afternoon as its distance medley relay team became the first-ever Calvin squad to earn All-America honors in indoor track and field.
On Friday, Calvin’s distance medley relay team of junior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS), junior Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Nicole Farr (Warrenville, IL/Warrenville South) and senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN/Century HS) took sixth at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships with a season-best time of 11:54.92. The relay had entered the national meet, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, seeded seventh. Heading into the final lap, Calvin sat in sixth place but Bergstrom powered through the final leg to move Calvin up two spots.
The anchor leg finish was part of a big afternoon for Bergstrom who was named the Great Lakes Women’s Regional Indoor Athlete of the Year the night before. Earlier on Friday, Bergstrom qualified for Saturday’s final in the mile run, clocking in with a time of 5:00.59 in the prelims. The time by Bergstrom was the fourth fastest time turned in during the two heats of Friday’s mile run prelims. Bergstrom will be one of 10 runners competing in Saturday’s finals.
Also scheduled to compete for Calvin on Saturday will be senior Julie Bratt (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) in the triple jump, senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA/Greenville HS) in the men’s 5,000 meter run and sophomore Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Eastern Christian HS), Koning, senior Kristen Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA/Trinity Christian HS) and senior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) in the women’s 4x400 meter relay.
