Box Score

After a nip-and-tuck first half, Calvin put the hammer down in the second half to roll to a 67-40 victory at Olivet Wednesday night. Calvin (19-4 overall, 13-1 MIAA) held Olivet without a field goal for the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the second half to pull away from the host Comets.

Calvin led 31-23 at halftime but used a 15-3 run to open the second half to build a 46-26 second half lead.

Olivet played Calvin even terms for most of the first half as the teams were tied 23-23 with 3:40 left in the first half. Calvin then scored the final eight points of the second half and kept the momentum rolling in the second half to pull away for the win.

“I want to give a lot of credit to Olivet for the way they played in the first half,” said Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross. “They ran their offense the way they wanted to and had us off-balance. We had a nice finish to the half though and then we really bumped up our intensity in the second half which was great to see.”

Calvin was led by sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with 18 points and 11 rebounds as she notched her 22nd collegiate double-double including her 11th double-double of the season. Sophomore Logan Marsh (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) also had a strong game with 10 points including a pair of three-point baskets to go with two assists and two steals. Sophomore Ally Wolffis (Muskegon/Mona Shores HS) had 10 points and five rebounds while sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had eight points and six boards off the bench. Junior guard Jill Thomas (Grand Rapids/West Catholic HS) added five points and a game-high five assists.

Calvin shot 44.8 percent overall and held Olivet to 28.3 percent field goal shooting including 20.7 percent in the second half. Tiffany Thelen led Olivet in scoring with 12 points.

Calvin will now break for a week and will return to action next Wednesday when it hosts Alma at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
