The Calvin women’s basketball team has been ranked number-one in the preseason issue of the Women’s Division III Basketball Newsletter. In addition, Calvin senior Carissa Verkaik has been named the preseason Division III Player of the Year by the publication. Verkaik was named the WDIII News 2012 Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocked shots a game. She was also named a Division III All-American by both and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Verkaik is one of three returning starters and 12 returning letterwinners for the Calvin women’s basketball team. The defending MIAA champions, Calvin reached the NCAA III quarterfinals in 2012, finishing with an overall record of 28-2.

Calvin’s season ended in the quarterfinals with a 83-72 overtime loss to St. Thomas of Minnesota. Ironically, Calvin will open its 2012-13 campaign against St. Thomas in a tournament hosted by Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, on November 16. On the second day of the tournament, Calvin will face Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a team Calvin defeated 67-62 in the second round of the 2012 NCAA III Tournament. Wisconsin-Stevens Point is ranked third in the preseason Women’s DIII News Top 25 poll while St. Thomas is ranked fifth. Defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan is ranked fourth while last year’s national runner-up - George Fox - is ranked second. MIAA rival Hope is ranked 13th in the poll. Of note, Thomas More is ranked 10th. Calvin is scheduled to face Thomas More on the road on November 24.
