THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The Calvin women’s basketball team opened its swing through Southern California with a 59-36 victory over Wesleyan (CT) Thursday afternoon at the Posada Royale Tournament hosted by Cal Lutheran University.
Ranked 24th nationally, Calvin (9-2) used stifling first half defensive pressure to roll to the win as the Knights led 33-11 at halftime and limited Wesleyan to just 11 percent shooting in the first half. Calvin held a 45-34 rebounding advantage and limited the Cardinals to 21.4 percent field goal shooting overall.
All 15 Calvin players received at least six minutes of playing time as the Knights substituted liberally throughout the second half. Sophomore Ally Wolffis led Calvin in scoring with 20 points to go with six rebounds while sophomore Julia Hilbrands had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik also had nine points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
“I thought our defensive intensity was very good,” said Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross. “It was also good to get everyone into the game. When you make a trip across the country, it’s nice to see everyone make contributions.”
Calvin will face host Cal Lutheran Friday night at 7 p.m. (EST). Cal Lutheran has won four consecutive games and has won five of its last six.
