NOTRE DAME. IN - Calvin remained unbeaten in the MIAA with a 76-55 victory at St. Mary’s on Saturday. The win advanced its record to 2-0 in conference and 5-2 overall.
“Any win on the road is good but this one was even more special because it was against a really good team,” said Coach John Ross.
The Knights opened up a double digit lead in the middle of the first half and didn’t look back. They finished the half up by 10. The deficit would never drop below that.
Calvin began the second half on fire, scoring six unanswered points, all of them from the paint. Ally Wolffis had four of those, en route to a career high 21 points.
The Belles did manage to string together a few runs and cut the lead to 10 points on two occasions. Calvin was up to the task, however, and clutch threes from Leah Mattson and Kelsey
Irwin stifled St. Mary’s runs.
From there, Calvin would effectively run out the clock. The Knights only missed once from the free throw line and shot 15-16.
“We played with a lot of guts tonight. It was a huge win for our young team on the road,” said Ross.
That was evident in the rebounded category, where Calvin held a 50-34 advantage.
The Knights also had 10 players record 13 minutes or more.
“We got a good performance from 10 players. That’s always good to see,” continued Ross.
Calvin returns to action on December 8 when it hosts nationally-ranked Carthage College at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
