Women’s Basketball Rolls to 87-59 Win Over Aquinas at Olivet Thanksgiving Classic

OLIVET - Calvin rolled to an 87-59 victory over cross-town rival Aquinas College Friday evening in a first round game of the Olivet College Thanksgiving Classic.
Sophomore center Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian HS) poured in 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting while blocking four shots. Verkaik was one of four Calvin players to notch double-digits in scoring as sophomore Allison Wolffis (Muskegon-Mona Shores HS) had 15 points, junior Heather DeKleine (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) 11 points and junior Courtney Kurncz (St. Johns HS) 10 points.
Fresh off her stint on Calvin’s national championship women’s volleyball team, sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids Christian HS) made her season debut and scored eight points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
Aquinas (1-5) was led in defeat by Shelby Carter (Byron Center HS) with 15 points while Ann Marie Shukamer had 10 points.
Calvin (3-1) blew open a tight game with a 19-9 scoring run in the first half that boosted the Knights into a 37-24 lead. The Knights continued on to take a 44-27 halftime lead and then used a 17-9 run to open the second half to put the game away.
“It was a good win and a good all-around team effort,” said Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross. “I was particularly pleased with our bench play. We’ll need more of the same tomorrow.”
Calvin (3-1) shot 53.7 percent from the floor overall. The Knights also connected on 7 of 14 (.500) from three-point range. Calvin also held a 46-36 rebounding advantage.
Calvin will face Indiana University-South Bend in a second round game Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. IU-South Bend defeated host Olivet 69-53 in Friday’s second game. IU-South Bend will bring a 4-3 game into Saturday’s contest.
