Women’s Basketball Keeps Foot on the Gas In 81-37 Victory Over Trine

The Calvin women’s basketball team showed no signs of a letdown Thursday night in an 81-37 victory over the visiting Trine University Thunder. The victory came just two days after an emotional 56-55 victory over rival Hope. With the win over Trine, Calvin (14-3 overall) finishes the first half of the MIAA schedule with an unbeaten 8-0 record, one game ahead of 7-1 Hope and two games ahead of 6-2 Albion.
After trailing 3-2 in the opening minutes of Thursday’s game with Trine, Calvin ripped off 23 unanswered points to take a 25-3 lead. The Knights were hot from the outside in the first half, connecting on 6-of-10 from three-point range, en route to taking a 43-10 halftime lead. Calvin shot 51.6 percent in the first half and maintained the pace in the second half, shooting 51.5 percent over the final 20 minutes of play.
Calvin substituted throughout the contest as 12 Knights received double-digits in minutes played.
Sophomore Ally Wolffis (Muskegon/Mona Shores HS) had 15 points to lead Calvin in scoring while sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had 12 points. Junior guard Jill Thomas (Grand Rapids/West Catholic HS) had nine points including a trio of three-point baskets while senior Allie Duernberger (Long Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS) did the same, connecting on three triples for nine points. Sophomore post Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also continued her strong play scoring nine points, grabbing nine rebounds, blocking two shots and collecting two steals.
As a team, Calvin was 8-of-21 (.381) from three-point range.
Calvin will now prepare for a key Saturday contest on Saturday, hosting the Belles of Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
