Women’s Basketball Holds On For 55-52 Win at Adrian - Now Owns Two-Game Lead in MIAA Standings

ADRIAN – Calvin remained unbeaten on the season but not without a fight as the Knights gained a 55-52 victory at upset-minded Adrian College Saturday afternoon at the Merillat Center. Ranked fourth nationally, Calvin built a nine-point second half lead on two occasions but could never completely shake the Bulldogs.
Adrian fought back from a 52-43 lead with 2:24 remaining to close to with three at 55-52 with 13 seconds remaining. A Calvin turnover with six seconds left gave Adrian a chance to tie the game but Calvin senior Jill Thomas came up with a clutch steal on the inbounds pass and was able to break away and dribble the rest of the time off the clock.
Calvin led 27-25 at halftime and then built a 49-40 lead in the second half before Adrian (6-9 overall, 3-6 MIAA) began its comeback run.
Junior Carissa Verkaik had another big game for the Knights, scoring 24 points on 10 of 15 field goal shooting. Freshman Kayla Engelhard had 11 points, four assists and two steals. Junior Julia Hilbrands added seven points off the bench. Katie Ross led Adrian with 16 points while Senneca Scott had 10 points off the bench.
Calvin shot 40.8 percent from the field but Adrian was able to hang in the game by outrebounding Calvin 35-29 with the Knights also committing 18 turnovers.
With the win, Calvin now has a two-game lead in the MIAA standings as Albion defeated Hope on Saturday 63-46. Albion and hope are now both 7-2 in league play, two games behind 9-0 Calvin. Calvin will host Albion Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
