Women’s Basketball Edges Trine - Clinches Third Seed For MIAA Tournament

ANGOLA, IN—The Calvin women’s basketball stretched its win streak to five games and clinched the third seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament with a come-from-behind 54-52 victory at Trine University Wednesday night.
A three-point play by senior Marcia Harris with 37 seconds left to play gave Calvin a 53-52 lead. Senior Kristi Brummel added a free throw with eight seconds left and a shot by Trine’s Sarah Howe in the final second of play was off the mark, allowing the Knights to pull out their second win of the year over the host Thunder. Calvin had earlier defeated Trine 71-65 in double-overtime at Calvin on January 7.
Calvin (15-8 overall, 9-6 MIAA) trailed 24-17 at halftime and fell behind by as many as 11 points in the second half at 37-26. The Knights slowly fought back into the game, taking their first lead of the second half at 48-47 on a three-pointer by junior Amber Benthem with 3:42 left to play. The triple by Benthem culminated a 22-10 Calvin run.
Trine (12-12 overall, 9-7 MIAA) regained the lead at 50-48 on a three-pointer by Howe with 3:17 left and then took a 52-48 lead on a pair of Howe free throws with 2:35 remaining. Brummel sliced the deficit in half on a layup by Brummel and then regained possession with 41 seconds left, setting up the game-winning three-point play by Harris.
Harris led Calvin in the victory with 15 points and four rebounds while junior Brook Van Eck scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Trine was led in the loss by Sarah Howe with 18 points and seven rebounds while Kristen Julian had 14 points and Jordan Loveberry 10 points and six rebounds.
Calvin held a 36-31 rebounding advantage but committed 24 turnovers. Trine also turned the ball over 21 times. Calvin shot 38.9 percent overall while Trine connected on 38.8 percent of its field goal attempts.
Calvin will close out its regular season on Saturday when it hosts rival Hopee at 2:00 p.m. in front of a Calvin Homecoming crowd.
As the third seed for the MIAA Tournament, Calvin will host a first round game on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Van Noord Arena.
