Women’s Basketball Defeats Albion - Hits 20-Win Plateau

ALBION—The Calvin women’s basketball team hit the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 2006-07 season and for the 11th time in program history with a 64-55 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon at Kresge Gymnasium.
Calvin is now 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the MIAA play. The Knights have also clinched the number-two for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. Hope clinched the top seed and a share of the MIAA regular season title on Saturday with a 94-75 victory over Saint Mary’s on Saturday.
Calvin used a 16-4 first half run to build a 27-15 lead. The Knights then led 34-21 at halftime with the Knights shooting 51.9 percent over the first 20 minutes.
Calvin extended its lead to 46-23 early in the second half and maintained a 63-43 lead with 3:16 remaining. Albion (11-12 overall, 6-8 MIAA) outscored Calvin 12-1 over the final three minutes to cut the final deficit to nine points.
Freshman Carissa Verkaik had 16 points and four blocked shots while senior point guard Emily Ottenhoff had a career-high 15 points including four three-point field goals. Ottenhoff also grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and collected one steal.
Senior Brook Van Eck also had 12 points and six rebounds while freshman Allison Wolffis had eight points off the bench.
Freshman Courtney Kurncz also had a game-high six assists and recorded two steals.
Melissa Shaw led Albion with 16 points while Patty Rewa had 14 and Keigan Edwards 11.
Ranked 11th nationally, Calvin will host Adrian next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
