Women’s Basketball Captures Siena Heights Tournament Title - Defeats Siena Heights 75-53

ADRIAN - The Calvin women’s basketball team captured the Siena Heights Tournament title on Saturday, defeating host Siena Heights (6-1) 75-53 Saturday afternoon in the tournament championship game. Calvin (5-0) led 33-6 in the first half with junior Carissa Verkaik scoring 22 of Calvin’s first 33 points. Verkaik finished the game with 35 points and 12 rebounds and moved past Eileen Boonstra and into seventh place on the Calvin career scoring list in the process. Freshman Kayla Engelhard added a career-high 12 points and dished out four assists. Junior Kelsey Irwin also had nine points for the Knights who improved to 5-0 on the year. Verkaik was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by Engelhard.Junior Kelsey Irwin connected on three triples for the Knights in the win, boosting her career total to 87, moving her past Cara Mulder and into fifth place on the Calvin career list. Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 7:30 p.m. contest in the MIAA opener for both teams.
