Tuesday, October 16, 2012
ALMA - Calvin was in sharp form Tuesday night in a 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 victory at Alma as the Knights improved to 22-2 overall and 12-0 in the MIAA. The Calvin win sets up a showdown for first place in the MIAA standings this Saturday as the Knights will travel to rival Hope. The Flying Dutch are 11-1 in league play with their only conference loss coming to Calvin back on September 21.
In addition, the two teams have now flip-flopped in the national poll as Hope is ranked second in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll released this afternoon while Calvin has dropped two spots to fourth after dropping a match to Elmhurst last weekend at the Midwest Invitational.
In its victory at Alma Tuesday night, Calvin hit .330 as a team led by senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) who cranked out 13 kills, nine digs and a hitting percentage of .393. Freshman Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) also got going as she recorded 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .364. Senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) contributed seven kills and sophomore Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) and senior Rebecca Ratkov (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay HS) six kills apiece.
Junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) amassed 36 assists and three service aces. Junior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian HS) had two service aces apiece with Gordon also collecting nine digs.
Saturday’s match at Hope is scheduled to begin at noon.
