The first set saw the Bulldogs hang tough through the first couple points, trailing 8-5. The Knights then reeled off seven straight points behind strong serving from freshman Laura Danhoff, including four service aces.
The ten point advantage was more than enough to see Calvin coast through the remainder of the first set as the Knights won 25-13.
In set two, Calvin jumped out to a commanding lead, opening up an 8-3 advantage behind three kills from sophomore Maggie Kamp.
Again, the Knights continued to roll, closing out the second set 25-11.
Adrian responded in the third set, taking a 9-7 lead out of the break. But, behind the serving of Danhoff, Calvin again responded with a run, scoring 11 straight points to take an 18-9 lead before closing out the Bulldogs 25-13.
Maggie Kamp led Calvin with 15 kills at a blistering clip of .444. Junior Emily Crowe added six while Danhoff, senior Megan Rietema, and junior Stacey Kamp all chipped in five. Rietema totaled 28 assists while senior Kristen Zietse had 16 digs. Danhoff ended the match with seven service aces.
“This match counts just as much as the Hope match, so we don’t take anything lightly,” said head coach Amber Warners. “One of the things we talk about all the time is, after every day of practice, after every night of a match, we want to be a better team walking out. We had a couple things that we were working on through the week of practice that we implemented tonight and we did a really nice job to start that. For the most part, with people going in and out, we controlled the tempo throughout the match, so I was really happy.”
The top-ranked Knights continue their undefeated season with the sweep, moving to 15-0 and 7-0 in conference, while Adrian drops to 4-11 and 0-7 in the MIAA.
The Knights will now see a six-day hiatus before returning to action next week Tuesday when they travel to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets.
