Volleyball Stops Saint Mary’s In Three

NOTRE DAME, IN – Calvin back into second place in the MIAA standings with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 conference victory at Saint Mary’s (14-8 overall, 7-6 MIAA) Tuesday night. Ranked 17th in the latest Division III Top 25 rankings, Calvin is now 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the MIAA. Alma is currently 9-3 in the league standings.
Calvin closed out set one with an 8-2 run to break open a tight opening contest. In set two, Calvin pulled away for the win behind kills from freshman Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Northern Michigan Christian HS) and Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS).
In set three, Calvin trailed 18-16 but outscored the host Belles 9-3 down the stretch to close out the match. Junior Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) had two key kills for Calvin in the closing run.
Kamp led Calvin with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .371. She was also credited with three block assists. Kramer had nine kills, a .280 hitting percentage, one block solo and three block assists. Senior setter Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian HS) had 39 assists. Junior Rachel DeYoung (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) chipped in with five kills and three block assists while sophomore Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) also had two block assists.
Junior libero Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) added 17 digs.
Calvin will now prepare for a match at rival Hope on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Hope will enter the match ranked 12th nationally an undefeated in the MIAA.
