Wittenberg Fall Classic

By Mitch Blankespoor

SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Calvin College womens volleyball team concluded day one of the Wittenberg Fall Classic, posting a 1-1 record.  Calvin defeated the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern in straights sets, before falling to top ranked Washington University in an epic five set match.

In the first match, Calvin defeated Ohio Northern by scores of 25-13, 25-19, 25-21.  Senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, Chicago Christian HS) led the Knights with 11 kills.  Freshmen Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and sophomore Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishiwaka Penn HS) added seven kills apiece.  Senior Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian HS) led Calvin with 16 digs.

The Knights second match against the top ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis proved to be an epic one.  Calvin fell in five sets by scores of 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-15, 18-16.
Lizzie Kamp and younger sister Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 18 kills apiece.  Senior Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian HS) and senior Jen Pluymert (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 25 and 12 digs respectively.  Calvin had the lead in the fifth set up until 9-9.  The Knights fought off three match points, but could not fight off a fourth.

In the first matchup, I liked the way we came out, head coach Amber Warners said.  We need to maintain this level of consistency throughout the whole match.

The Knights did just that in the second match, hanging with the top ranked team in the country till the end.

Im proud of the courage and the fight we showed, Warners said.  Im sad with the loss, but we are a better team tonight than we were this morning.

Calvin returns to action tomorrow when they face Wittenberg and Heidelberg.
