Volleyball Posts 2-2 Record at Wittenberg Border Battle

SPRINGFIELD, OH – Calvin posted a 2-2 weekend record at the Wittenberg University Border Battle. The fourth-ranked Knights opened play on Friday with back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked Heidelberg and Wittenberg but came back to defeat nationally-ranked Ohio Northern Saturday morning and also the College of Mount St. Joseph Saturday afternoon.
Junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS), sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and freshman Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were all named to the Michigan All-Tournament Team.
Calvin (9-2 overall) opened play with a 24-26, 28-26, 25-20, 17-25, 15-12 loss to 19th-ranked Heidelberg Friday afternoon. Rebecca Kamp had 20 kills, Lizzie Kamp 12 kills and junior Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) 11 kills while Rietema had 54 assists. Junior Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) and Lizzie Kamp had 18 digs apiece while sophomore Kim Start (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had 14 digs.
Calvin then dropped a 25-23, 25-17, 25-16 loss to fifth-ranked Wittenberg Friday night. Rebecca Kamp had 15 kills and Lizzie Kamp 10 kills in the defeat. Peterson had 14 digs and Rietema 31 assists.
On Saturday morning, Calvin defeated 12th-ranked Ohio Northern 25-16, 16-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-5 behind 20 kills from Rebecca Kamp, 11 kills apiece from VanderPlas and Lizzie Kamp and 10 kills from junior Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Rietema had 52 assists and Peterson 17 digs. DeHaan had five block assists and Kamp six block assists.
Calvin closed out the tournament with a 25-17, 25-21, 24-26, 25-22 win over the College of Mount St. Joseph. Rebecca Kamp had 19 kills, VanderPlas 11 kills and Lizzie Kamp 10 kills. Rietema had 43 assists and Peterson 17 digs. DeHaan also had five block assists.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Albion at 6:30 p.m. in an MIAA conference match.
