Volleyball Opens Season With Pair of Victories at Midwest Challenge

The nationally-ranked Calvin volleyball team opened its 2010 campaign with a pair of victories Friday at the Midwest Challenge, defeating Cornerstone 25-1, 25-17, 25-22 and Thiel College 25-19, 25-12, 25-18. Calvin will close out tournament play on Saturday with a noon match against Mount Union at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse.

In its win over Cornerstone, the ninth-ranked Knights were led by sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) with 14 digs and 11 kills while junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had four blocks and two aces. Junior Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac, MI/McBain Christian HS) had 10 kills with junior Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) contributing nine kills.

Junior libero Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) had 19 digs while freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) contributed 40 assists and four blocks.

In the win over Thiel, Rietema had 36 assists while Peterson had 10 digs. Sophore Jenn Pluymert (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two aces. Lizzie Kamp had 12 kills and Becca Kamp 11 kills.
