Volleyball Now 20-4 After Trio of Wins In Arizona

CHANDLER, AZ Calvin upped its season record to 20-4 with three non-conference victories in Arizona on Saturday. Calvin has now reached the 20-win plateau 14 consecutive years.

The Knights opened the day with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 victory at Southwestern College (AZ) behind the play of freshman Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) who had eight kills while junior Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) and freshman Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) had six kills apiece. Senior setter Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian HS) had 20 assists while sophomore setter Carolyn Nelson (Milan/Milan HS) was strong off the bench with 10 assists in just one set of action. Junior Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) also had 13 digs.

Calvin then journeyed over to Chandler Valley Christian High School where it met Embry-Riddle University in a pair of matches.

In the first match, Calvin handed Embry-Riddle a 25-15, 25-16, 25-16 defeat behind 15 kills from Kamp and 30 assists from DeGroot.

The Knights then topped Embry-Riddle match number-two, winning by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-19. Kamp had 15 kills and junior Rachel DeYoung (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) five kills. Nelson got the start and was stellar with 20 assists. Kamp also had two solo blocks and five block assists while Kramer, DeYoung and senior Jessica Garlick (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian HS) all had one solo block.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 6:30 p.m. at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center in an MIAA match.
