Volleyball Gains Top Spot in MIAA Poll/Ranked Third in National Poll
Wednesday, August 15, 2012
The Calvin women’s volleyball team has been picked to win its third consecutive MIAA regular season championship. The defending MIAA champion Knights received six of a possible nine first place votes in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll released this afternoon to gain the top spot. Rival Hope picked up the other three first place votes and is second in the poll. Alma is third followed by Trine in fourth.
In addition, Calvin has been ranked third in the preseason Top 25 Division III poll conducted by the American Volleyball Coaches Association of America. Christopher Newport (NC) is the top-ranked team while Washington University (Mo.) is ranked second with Emory University (GA) ranked fourth and Wittenberg University (OH) ranked fifth. Hope is ranked eighth in the top 25 poll.
A year ago, Calvin finished 33-1 overall and 16-0 in the MIAA. Calvin’s only loss was to eventual national champion Wittenberg in the NCAA III Regional finals.
Calvin returns 14 letterwinners from last year’s team including six seniors. Of the returning letterwinners, two received AVCA Division III All-America honors last fall as junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a first team selection while senior outside hitter Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) was a second team choice.
