HOLLAND – Calvin’s seven-match win streak came to an end as did its sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as the Knights were defeated at rival Hope Wednesday night 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.
Using the momentum of playing in front of more than 2,000 fans, Hope grabbed a quick 6-1 lead in set one and used an 8-3 run midway through the set to grab an early one-set lead.
In set two, Calvin (15-3 overall, 10-1 MIAA) grabbed an 11-8 lead but Hope (14-4 overall, 10-1 MIAA) went on a 6-2 run to regain the momentum and move on to the set two win.
In set three, Calvin held an 11-5 advantage but could not withstand Hope’s comeback effort as the Flying Dutch went on a 13-6 run to take an 18-17 lead and never trailed again.
Playing in her first match in nearly three weeks after missing substantial time because of illness, Calvin junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a huge performance in defeat, amassing 18 kills and a .417 attack percentage. Younger sister Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 11 kills while freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 35 assists. Junior Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) had 12 digs while Rietema added 11 digs.
Normally a force up front, Calvin’s blocking attack came up with just seven total blocks in the three-set loss as Hope hit .250 as a team led by Jacie Fiedler’s 17 kills.
Calvin will now prepare for a weekend tournament at North Central College which will also include teams from Wheaton (IL), St. Mary’s (MN) and St. Norbert (WI).
