Volleyball Defeats Trine 3-0, Will Face Hope Saturday for MIAA Tournament Crown

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin College volleyball team defeated Trine University in the semifinals of the MIAA Conference Tournament on Friday evening with scores of 25-16, 25-17, 27-25. The Knights will play Hope College tomorrow for the MIAA Tournament Championship.
Calvin (27-2, 16-0) came out hot from the start, hitting a .455 clip in its decisive first set victory. The quick start and energy from the crowd set the tone for the rest of the match. Although the Knights only hit .100 in the second set, they held Trine to a mere .028 clip. The Thunder (19-12, 9-7) showed some fight in the final set, pushing it to extra points before falling 27-25.
Calvin’s attack was led by sisters Lizzie and Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) with 15 kills each. Junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) dished out 35 assists and defensive specialists Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian) and Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) anchored the back row with 12 and 10 digs respectively.
“It always gets more intense once you get to the postseason because teams are going to give you their best every single night“ said Calvin head coach Amber Warners. “I think we stepped up and rose to the occasion.”
The Knights with play the fourth-ranked Flying Dutch of Hope College (27-3, 14-2) tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. in the MIAA Tournament Championship game. The Flying Dutch took down Alma College in the other semi-final match in straight sets with scores of 25-9, 25-18, 25-9.
