Volleyball Clinches Share of MIAA Regular Season Title and Top Seed For Upcoming MIAA Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin College women’s volleyball team improved its conference record to 14-0 with a win over Trine University on Wednesday night. The Knights battled and pulled out a three set victory defeating the Thunder 25-19, 25-16, 25-18. With this win, Calvin clinched a share of the MIAA regular season title and also secured the top seed for the MIAA Tournament. The MIAA title is Calvin’s third straight including its fifth under current head coach Amber Warners. The title is also the 19th in Calvin women’s volleyball history – more than any other MIAA school.
The Knights (24-2, 14-0 MIAA) front line was key in pulling out the win. Calvin had 11 team blocks, holding Trine to a .029 clip. Calvin was led by senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) with 14 kills, while freshman Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) had ten. Junior Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) had 26 assists and nine digs.
“Trine deserves a lot of credit for their defense and intensity tonight. We had to work for everything,” said junior setter Megan Rietema after the match.
The Thunder (18-10, 9-6 MIAA) were led by freshman Taylor Rabel and senior Betsy Irwin with 9 and 8 kills respectively. Sophomore Carly Searles had an impressive all-around performance with 13 assists, 14 digs, and four kills.
Calvin will play its final home game of the regular season on Friday evening when it faces off against Saint Mary’s College at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
