ALMA, MI – The Calvin College women’s volleyball team came to Alma’s Art Smith Arena with its perfect season on the line. The Knights first squared off against the Scots of Alma College. Almost a month ago, the Calvin rolled over Alma 25-14, 25-17, 25-13. This time around, each team would be without a key player; sophomore outside hitter Megan Korber for Calvin and sophomore setter Erika VanHavel for Alma. The result, however, was the same. Alma failed to score 15 points in any set as Calvin downed the Scots by scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-12.
Calvin hit a .357 clip as a team while holding the Scots to -.011. The Knights had eight team blocks and served as many aces.
Junior Lizzie Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) led the Knights scoring 11 kills including four kills in five points in the third set. She also included eight digs. Senior Erin Vander Plas (Northern Michigan Christian) was the other Knight scoring double digit kills with ten. She chipped in four blocks as well. Senior middle blockers Rebecca Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored eight and five kills respectively. DeHaan contributed five blocks. Sophomore setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) dished out 33 assists. Senior libero Kelly Gordon (South Christian HS) had 15 digs.
The Scots were led by senior Shelby Gray who recorded six kills. Junior Kelsee Miles dished out 17 assists.
“Alma is a good team. They can give anyone a game.” Head coach Amber Warners reflected. “I was very pleased with the intensity we came out with today. We took Alma out of its game right away.”
The Knights took the court three hours later against the Finlandia University Lions. The match was over very quickly. It took the Calvin just 44 minutes to dismantle the Lions in straight sets by scores of 25-7, 25-5, 25-4.
Calvin hit a .500 clip, while holding Finlandia to .222. The Knights outblocked the Lions nine to zero.
Calvin used a balanced attack to defeat Finlandia. Sophomore Morgan Hahn (Delta HS) and junior Rebecca Ratkov (Anchor Bay HS) lead scored seven kills. Ratkov also added five blocks. Freshmen Ellie Diepersloot (Chowchilla HS) added seven kills of her own. Megan Rietema dished out 21 assists despite playing two sets. Kelly Gordon assumed the setting duties for the Knights in the final set scoring six assists. She also added six service aces, several of which came in a 16-point service run to close out the match. Gordon and freshmen Elise Biesboer (Timothy Christian HS) dug out six balls.
“Every player on this team has a great work ethic. It was nice to see everyone get on the court, especially those who don’t normally get to see the floor.” Warners commented after the match.
Top-ranked Calvin (26-0, 13-0 MIAA) returns to action this Wednesday when the Trine Thunder come to the Van Noord Arena.
