Volleyball Claims Win at Olivet in Straight Sets - Turns Attention to Midwest Challenge

OLIVET- The number-one ranked Knights won in three straight sets against the Comets of Olivet on Wednesday night with scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-20. This match took place at the Cutler Event Center on the campus of Olivet College.
With the win the Knights improve to 19-0 overall and 11-0 in MIAA conference play. This win making 49 straight wins for Calvin in the conference. The Olivet Comets are now 5-6 in MIAA play and 8-14 overall.
The Knights started the match coming out flat winning the first set by a score 25-19. Calvin then came back to life in the second set winning that one convincingly with a score of 25-8. The Comets then came back in the third, led by senior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, IN; Valparaiso) who ended the match with 9 emphatic kills and 1 block.
Despite the great play of the Comets the Knights took the match in three straight sets to beat a strong Olivet team who prior to this game shared a third place spot in the MIAA with Saint Mary’s and Kalamazoo.
As a team the Knights had a stellar 39 kills, 29 digs and 10 blocks.
Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL; Chicago Christian) led all players with 14 kills and added on 4 blocks. Laura Danhoff (Willard,OH; Willard) followed with 9 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces from the service line. Junior Emily Crowe (Granger,IN; Mishawaka Penn) led the team with 7 blocks and tacked on 5 kills. Elle Diepersloot (Madera,CA; Chowchilla) also added 5 kills. Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids; Grand Rapids Christian) lead all players with 32 assists she also tallied 4 kills, 3 digs and 3 aces from behind the baseline. Both Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst,IL; Timothy Christian) and Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids; Grand Rapids Christian) shared the lead in digs both players ended with 8.
The Knights return to action at the Midwest Challenge Tournament that Calvin is co-hosting along with Hope College. The Knights will play two matches on Friday and also two additional matches on Saturday. On Friday, Calvin will face eighth-ranked Mount Union at 4 p.m. and then meet 13th-ranked Wittenberg at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Calvin will face sixth-ranked Elmhurst at 11 a.m. and then meet 15th-ranked Chicago at 3 p.m. All four matches will be played at Van Noord Arena.
