In their final regular season game, the Knights rattled off another three set victory against Alma on Saturday.  Ranked seventh nationally, Calvin (24-3 overall, 15-1 MIAA) won 25-17, 25-14, and 25-20, showing off some impressive front and back row defense.

With the win, Calvin clinched a share of the final MIAA regular season title – Calvin’s first since 2007 and its 17th overall which leads all MIAA institutions. Calvin shares the final league crown with Hope which defeated St. Mary’s on Saturday to also finish 15-1 in league play.

“I thought we played amazing defense today.  It was one of our best defensive performances of the year,” said Coach Amber Warners.

Calvin opened the first set with big kills from both Lizzie and Rebecca Kamp.  They were helped by some diving defensive efforts from libero Kelly Peterson.  Junior Renee DeHaan closed out the set with a strong kill off the block of the Scots.

Calvin went down 4-0 to begin the second set, but then stormed back to take an 8-5 lead, forcing Alma Coach Cheyenne Luzynski to call a timeout.  Out of the timeout, Calvin continued to roll, taking the game to 16-7 before Luzynski called another timeout.  Rebecca Kamp then came through with a big kill in the middle to finish the second set.

Alma gave Calvin a tough third set, leading 18-14 at one point.  The Knights charged back to take a lead, and then tie the game at 20-20.  Freshman setter Megan Rietema tipped on the second contact twice to give Calvin a victory in the third set and their 14th conference win.

“It feels great [to ensure a share of the conference title],” said Warners.  “We’ve worked hard and it’s a great accomplishment.  I’m really proud of the way they’ve played over the past month,” she concluded.

Calvin will hold the second seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament as Hope holds the tiebreaker edge over the Knights by virtue of defeating Calvin in three sets earlier this year while Calvin’s win over Hope was in four sets.
