Box Score

ALBION – The Calvin College volleyball team concluded the regular season Saturday with a straight set victory over the Britons of Albion College by scores of 25-15, 25-11, 25-15.  The win for the Knights is their 36th straight MIAA conference victory.

The Knights used a first set service run from senior libero Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian) to gain the early lead 5-1.  Albion would get as close as two points, but another service run from junior Kristi Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) gave Calvin an insurmountable lead in the first set.

The second set was much like the first.  Despite having only five kills, five errors and a .000 attacking percentage, Calvin won the second set easily.  The Knights turned up the intensity on defense, forcing the Britons into 12 attack errors.

The third set was close to start.  Calvin junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) stepped to the service line with the Knights holding a slim 14-11 lead.  With Rietema’s serve, and four straight kills from senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian), Calvin extended its lead to 21-11 and never looked back.

Calvin was led offensively by Lizzie Kamp, who scored 16 kills on just 26 attempts.  She hit a blistering .538 on the match.  Senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in nine kills and four blocks, two of the solo variety.  Rietema dished out 29 assists.  Calvin totaled 48 digs and seven blocks as a team.

Albion was led on senior day by Lauren DeLuyck with six kills.

With its win, Calvin improves to 26-2 and 16-0 in the MIAA on the season.

“It feels nice to get through the MIAA regular season undefeated,” Calvin head coach Amber Warners said after the match.  “We still have a lot of work to do before the MIAA Tournament starts later next week.”
This tournament Warners speaks of will be hosted by Calvin.  Second seeded Hope will play third seeded Alma on Friday at 5:30 at the Van Noord Arena.  Top seeded Calvin will face fourth seeded Trine at 7:30.
