Travis Vegter Named NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III All-American
Friday, December 13, 2013
Calvin College junior Travis Vegter has been named a second team NCAA Division III All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as sponsored by Continental Tire. The award was announced earlier this morning.
A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter is receiving Divison III All-America honors for the first time.
A forward, Vegter tallied a team-leading 27 goals and 60 points this fall while also receiving credit for six assists. Four of his goals were game-winners during the season.
His 27 goals were the second highest single-season total in Calvin men’s soccer history and ranked second nationally heading into last weekend. Vegter is currently ranked fourth on the Calvin career list in goals (44) and fifth in points (104). The MIAA’s Most Valuable Player this fall, Vegter was named to the All-MIAA first team and was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week three times. He was also named the Division III National Player of the Week once by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Vegter helped the Calvin men’s soccer team finish 14-5-1 overall and win its seventh consecutive MIAA regular season title with a 12-2-0 conference record.
“We are all very proud of Travis and excited to see him receive this award,” said Calvin men’s soccer coach Ryan Souders. “Travis had a wonderful season and is certainly extremely worthy of this award but at the same time, Travis would also be the first to admit that he could not have done what he did this year without the support of his teammates both on and off the field.”
Last month, Vegter was named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-America first team for achieving high marks in the classroom. He is the first individual in Calvin men’s soccer history to be named both an NSCAA Division III All-American and a Capital One Academic All-American.
“At Calvin College, we stress equal emphasis on academic and athletic achievement as well as spiritual growth,” said Souders. “Travis is a example of a young man who has worked hard to grow in all three areas and as a coach, that is extremely satisfying to see.”
