Track & Field Teams/Athletes Receive All-Academic Honors From USTFCCCA

NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced the menís and women’‘s 2011 Division III All-Academic Track & Field team. A total of 200 student-athletes represent the men’s list of honorees while 328 individuals were so honored ont he women’s side. The Calvin men had four individuals that received all-academic accolades while the Calvin women’s team had seven. Individuals honored from the Calvin men’s team include senior Ben Van Wyk and sophomores Greg Whittle, Dan Kerr and Matt VanderRoest. Individuals from the Calvin womenís track and field team that received USTFCCA All-Academic status include seniors Samantha Westveer Rachel Boerner and Gretchen Braymer, junior Jordan Gabrielse and sophomores Alyssa Penning and Carissa Verkaik.
In addition, the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic team honors. In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.10 through the recently completed 2010-11 academic year.
To qualify for the individual USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.
The Calvin men’s and womenís track and field team was led by second-year head coach Bret Otte this season. Under his direction, both Calvin teams captured MIAA titles this past spring.
