HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s distance runners ran wild at the Hillsdale Gina Relays Thursday and Friday night.

On Friday night, Calvin runners established school records in both the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter run. In the women’s Invite 5,000 meters Friday night, senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took first place with a time of 16:40.25. Her time shatters the previous Calvin record of 16:54.20 set by Betsy Haverkamp in 1997. Hoekstra’s time is also the second-fastest time in Division III women’s track and field this spring. Sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also had a monster performance in the race, clocking a career-best time of 17:07.96 that should also place her high on the NCAA III 5K performance list.

On the men’s side, senior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) shattered the Calvin men’s 5K record with a time of 14:12.39. Kramer’s time surpasses the previous Calvin mark of 14:22.56 set by Jed Christiansen in 2009. Kramer took second in Friday night’s Invite race behind Thomas Breitbach of Wisconsin-Eau Claire who took first in a time of 14:09.60. Kramer’s time is the fourth-best in Division III men’s track and field this spring.

Kramer was one of two standout performers from Calvin in the men’s Invite 5K race Friday as junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) was 17th in a career-best time of 14:29.92. His time will place him in the top 10 on the NCAA III outdoor 5K list.

In the men’s 10,000 meters, senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) took third with a career-best time of 29:42.36. His time is the third-best on the NCAA III outdoor 10K list this spring.

In the men’s 1500 meters, junior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) had a season-best time of 3:50.15. His time will also place him in the top 10 on the NCAA III outdoor 1500 list.

On the women’s side, senior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) had a career-best time of 4:40.06 in the 1500 meters.

In the women’s invite only 3,000 meter steeplechase run Friday night, junior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a season-best time of 10:48.46 that will also vault her into the top 10 of the NCAA III performance list. Sophomore Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan) also had a season-best time of 11:34.36.

The stage for Friday’s races was set the night before when another group of Calvin distance runners put a series of personal-best times together at Hillsdale. In the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase open race, freshman Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) had a career-best time of 9:50.07 as did sophomore Philip Spitzer (Kingsley/Buckley HS) with a time of 10:11.86.

In the men’s open 5,000 meter run, sophomore Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) took fourth with a career-best time of 14:49.39 while junior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) did the same with a time of 15:10.95.

On the women’s side, Calvin got big races from junior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial Senior High) and freshman Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) in the women’s 1500 meter open race as Brase was second (4:44.53) and Ardinger sixth (4:47.07).  Sophomore Lizzy Vannette (Visalia, CA/Valley Christian HS) also cracked five minutes (4:55.49) as did senior Sarah Fennema (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) in a time of 4:56.91.

In the women’s 5,000 meters, freshman Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a season-best time of 18:23.26.
