Track and Field Teams Compete at Grand Rapids Open at Houseman Field

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams had strong performances at the Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College College Saturday afternoon at Houseman Field.
Both teams had impressive showings in the high jump early in the meet as junior Carissa Verkaik won the women’s competition (5-5) while sophomore Matt Christians won the men’s competition (6-6 3/4). Verkaik’s performance came in her first track and field competition of the year. Christians meanwhile cruised through his first three attempts, clearing the bar at 6-3, 6-5 and 6-6 3/4 before barely missing to clear the bar at 6-9.
The field events were a strength for both Calvin teams. On the men’s side, junior Aaron Meckes was a winner in the shot put (51-3) while placing second in the discus (153-2). Senior Justin Kremers also took second in the javelin (162-4).
On the women’s side, freshman Jordyn Platt took second in the javelin (101-5) while sophomore Hilary Banning was second in the triple jump (35-11 1/4) and third in the long jump (16-3).
On the track, junior Alyssa Penning got things off with a bang for the women’s team, winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:30.66. She led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish with younger sister Kimby Penning placing second (11:49.97), sophomore Alyssa Oram third (12:03.98) and freshman Paige McMahan fourth (12:19.82).
Calvin also took the top two spots in the men’s steeplechase with sophomore Sam Kerk winning in a time of 9:52.05 while sophomore teammate Philip Spitzer was second (9:56.55).
Other winners for the Calvin women included sophomore Olivia Butler in the 600 meters (1:37.82), senior Jodi Hoekstra in the 3,000 meters (10:06.93), freshman Kelley Tuinenga in the 300 meter hurdles (48.71), sophomore Stephanie Bennett in the 300 meters (41.95) and the quartet of sophomore Julie Busscher, freshman Amy Sybesma, Butler and junior Kaylea Brase in the 4x400 meter relay (4:04.67).
Other notables on the track for the Calvin men included freshman Erik Holstege placing second in the 110 high hurdles (16.90) and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles (43.21), Kremers placing fifth in the 300 meters (37.15), freshman Josh Ferguson placing fifth in the 3,000 meters (8:49.86) and junior Nathan Frazier placing fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:07.53).
Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete next Saturday at the All-American Invitational hosted by Adrian College.
