Swimming & Diving Teams Wrap Up Competition at Calvin Winter Invitational

The second annual Calvin Winter Invitational concluded on Saturday with the Calvin women’s team finishing second with 549 points while the Calvin men’s team took fifth with 296 points. Grand Valley State won both competitions with its third-ranked men’s team finishing with 1,331 points while its top-ranked women’s team garnered 1,223 points. Kalamazoo took second in the men’s standings with 597 points and was third behind Calvin in the women’s competition with 464.5 points.
On Saturday, four meet records were set in the men’s competition while four meet records were also set on the women’s side. Meet records in the men’s competition included Jeffrey Pauza of Grand Valley in the 500 freestyle (4:35.88), Aaron Beebe of Grand Valley in the 100 butterfly (48.35), Craig Fleming of Kalamazoo in the 100 freestyle (44.90) and Kalamazoo’s 400 freestyle relay team (3:01.83). Meet records in the women’s competition included Carly Bush of Grand Valley in the 500 freestyle (5:04.41), Caitlyn Madsen of Grand Valley in the 200 backstroke (2:05.15), Antonia Musto of Grand Valley in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.36) and Karen Verbrugge of Grand Valley on the one-meter diving board (452.60).
Calvin continued to put up strong performances on Saturday. On the men’s side, freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) highlighted the evening for the Knights, winning the three-meter diving competition with an NCAA III qualifying score of 463.00 points.
Other notable performances for the Calvin men included sophomore Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, IN) placing fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.53), sophomore Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) placing seventh in the 100 butterfly (51.98) and junior Ross Battoclette (Cincinnatti, OH) placing 10th in the 500 freestyle (4:51.31) and 11th in the 100 freestyle (47.96).
In the women’s meet, sophomore Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) had a big day, placing third in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA III condititional qualifying time of 2:23.57 while also finishing seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:20.93). Sophomore Samantha Klaasen (Holland Christian HS) led a strong performance on the one-meter diving board, placing second with an NCAA III qualifying score of 415.35 points while teammate Carmen Brummel (Unity Christian HS) was seventh with a score of 318.55. Other top performances included sophomore Rachel Bos (Unity Christian HS) placing second in the 100 freestyle (53.87), senior Caitlin Alexander (Holland Christian HS) finishing third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.02) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:17.15), senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH) placing fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:13.15).
