Returning to action after a week of practice, the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted Wheaton Saturday afternoon.
The men were looking for their second win in two years against the Thunder, and were able to open up the swimming with a first place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Calvin would then claim first in the 1000 Yard Freestyle via Mathias Bares, who won with a time of 10:21.47. In the 200 Yard Free, the men would take the 1-2-3 finish with Ross Battoclete coming in first at 1:46.00, Alex Baumann in second at 1:48.07, and Travis Vincent in third at 1:49.55.
The men would continue to bring in the first place finishes as the top spot was claimed by Greg Gorham in the 100 Yard Breaststroke [1:01.94], Peter Johnson in the 100 and 200 Yard Butterfly [54.00, 2:01.69], Mark Rushlow in the 50 Yard Freestyle [22.07], Ross Battoclette in the 100 Yard Freestyle [48.01], and the Calvin A relay team of Battoclete, Baumann, Mitchell, and Rushlow in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights would also take first in both diving events as Andrew Krafft took the 1 Meter Diving with a score 341.55 and the 3 Meter Diving with a score of 270.68.
The men would take the meet by an overall score of 169-129, winning their second straight meet against the Thunder. “Ross Battoclete lead the charge for us, in the 200 free and the 100 free,” said Head Coach Dan Gelderloos. “He really set the tone.”
The women would fight back and forth all day against the Thunder. In the first event of the day, the Knights A relay team of Fox, Bos, Counsell, and Colasurdo would take the 200 Yard Medley Relay in a time of 1:52.74, good for first. Stephie Fox and Elizabeth Counsell would prove to be key for the Knights as they both took top spots in a number of events. Fox took individual top finishes in the 100 and 200 Yard Freestyle [55.02, 1:57.95], while Counsell took first place in the 100 and 200 Yard Breaststroke [1:07.61, 2:30.10]. In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, the Calvin women took a 1-2 finish as Alexi Scott would come in first with a time of 2:15.14 while Counsell would follow up in second at 2:19.64, out-touching the third place Wheaton swimmer by one-hundredth of a second. The Knights also took first place in both diving events as Samantha Klaasen won the 3 Meter Dive and the 1 Meter Dive, with Rebecca Mumby taking second in the 1 Meter Dive.
Heading into the final event a point ahead of Wheaton, the Calvin women had to win the final event to take the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights A relay team of Dhaenes, Colasurdo, Rechel, and Fox would take the final event in a time of 3:41.88, claiming the meet for Calvin.
The women won the meet by an overall score of 147-137.
“Wheaton is a very formidable opponent. We have a lot of guys this year and more women than last year, and we’re off to a very good start,” said Gelderloos. “The teams have a lot to fight for. They’re going to have a good year.”
