Although it was an unscored meet, the Knights got their 2010-11 season underway Saturday afternoon and saw good results in the Calvin-hosted MIAA Relays.  The Knights swam well on both the men and women’s sides, and the meet proved to be a good survey of where most teams in the conference are at this point in the long season.

“We were just looking to see what we have and what everybody else in the league has right now,” Coach Gelderloos said.  “This year we have a lot quieter of a team but they’re a very hardworking bunch.”

On the women’s side, the Knights won many of the relay races.  In the 200 yd back relay Calvin’s A team (Caitlin Alexander, Brianna Vanden Ende, Stephie Fox, Monica Bressler) finished first with a time of 1:53.78.  In the 1500 yd free relay Calvin’s A team (Stephie Fox, Shelby Cloyd, Claire Strunk) won with a time of 16:15.01.  In the 200 yd fly relay Calvin’s A team (Rachel Bos, Rachel Colasurdo, Ellie Price, Caitlin Alexander) won in a time of 1:51.44.  The 400 yd medley relay saw Calvin’s A team (Libby Counsell, Caitlin Alexander, Ellie Price, Rachel Colasurdo) win in a time of 4:19.16.  And finally in the 200 yd free relay, Calvin’s A team (Rachel Bos, Stephie Fox, Maria Sedjo, Monica Bressler) won in a time of 1:41.94.

Second place finishes for the Calvin women included the A team (Libby Counsell, Rachel Colasurdo, Ellie, Price, Gillian Morris) for the 200 yd breast relay in a time of 2:11.25, the A team (Bos, Sedjo, Rechel, Cloyd) for the 500 yd free relay in a time of 4:54.33, and the B team (Kendra Kinzer, Cloyd, Strunk) for the 1500 free relay in a time of 16:46.80.

“The women won a bunch of races and look to be very deep again,” Gelderloos said of his reigning MIAA champion women.  “Our goal is still to win our league and to compete at a high level nationally, but we definitely have to reprove ourselves.”

On the men’s side, the top finishes were a second place finish in the 200 yd breast relay as Calvin’s A team (Greg Gorham, Stephen Kraft, Jon Ptashnik, Peter Johnson) finished in a time of 1:55.57, and a second place finish in the 400 yd medley relay as Calvin’s A team (Greg Gorham, Stephen Kraft, Peter Johnson, Mathias Bares) finished in a time of 3:51.92.

“For the men we saw a bunch of yellow [Calvin] caps in the front of the pack which is very fun to see,” Gelderloos said of the men’s performance.

The next meet for the Knights will be another home meet next week Friday as Calvin hosts Grand Valley.
