Swimming & Diving Teams Open Dual Meet Seasons Against Grand Valley State

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in action Friday night, hosting Grand Valley State in a non-conference dual meet. The visiting Lakers came out on top in both competitions, winning the men’s meet 144-86 and the women’s meet 166-72. The Knights are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Alma for 1 p.m. dual meets.

In the men’s meet, Calvin freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) swept both diving competitions, winning the one-meter board with a score of 267.10 and the three-meter board with a score of 292.80, less than six points off Calvin’s school record of 298.50 set by Bill VanEe in 1985. Other first place performances for the Calvin men included sophomore Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, IN) in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.11) and freshman Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain, MI), freshman Casey Harless (DeWitt, MI), freshman Adam Alexander (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Devin Heitz (Brockport, NY) in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:25.07.

On the women’s side, sophomore Samantha Klaasen (Holland Christian HS) had a good showing, placing fourth on the one-meter board (228.15) and fourth on the three-meter board (219.20). Freshman Elise Kauffman (Sugarland, TX) also had a big night, finishing third on the three-meter (226.80) and sixth on the one-meter (208.10). Calvin also went one-two in the 200 breaststroke with sophomore Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) taking first (2:29.47) and sophomore Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA) taking second (2:35.07). Calvin’s 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Stephanie Fox (Kentwood, MI), senior Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN), senior Monica Bessler (Sandusky, OH) and sophomore Rachel Bos (Unity Christian HS) also took first place in a time of 3:45.78.

The Knights are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Alma for 1 p.m. dual meets.
