Swimming and Diving Teams Defeat Olivet in Dual Meets

The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up dual meet victories over Olivet on Saturday with the women defeating Olivet 199-68 and the men defeating Olivet 161-111. The Calvin women are now 5-3 in dual meet action while the Calvin men are 4-3.
In the men’s meet, Calvin had three double-winners as sophomore Mitch Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 200 free (1:50.02) and 100 free (48.41), sophomore Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) won the 1,000 free (10:05.22) and 500 free (4:59.01) and senior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) won the 50 free (21.80) and 100 butterfly (53.43).
Other individual winners for Calvin included sophomore Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) in the 100 breaststroke (58.46), sophomore Caleb Meindertsma (Annondale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) in the 200 fly (2:00.22), junior Travis Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) in the 200 backstroke (2:08.72), freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) in the 100 backstroke (54.46) and junior Andrew Vanderlei (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.98).
Calvin’s 200 medley relay team of Mitchell, freshman Eli Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Covenant HS), Stoughton and Schroder won in a time of 1:37.81.
In the women’s competition, junior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) was a triple-winner, claiming the 1,000 freestyle (11:08.54), the 200 backstroke (2:13.32) and the 500 free (5:27.18). Sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) won the 100 backstroke (1:01.27), 200 breaststroke (2:33.45) and 100 butterfly (59.91).
Other individual winners included freshman Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS) in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.13), sophomore Alayna Gallegos (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville HS) in the 200 fly (2:17.92), senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS) in the 50 freestyle (25.63), junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) on the one-meter diving board (239.90), freshman Rebecca Freed (Rochester/Rochester Stoney Creek HS) on the three-meter diving board (243.40) and freshman MEgan Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 100 freestyle (56.24).
Calvin’s 200 medley relay team of junior Betsy Otten (Shebogyan, WI/Sheboygan County Christian HS), junior Lexi Scott (Richmond, IN/Richmond HS), senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) won in a time of 1:54.23.
Both Calvin teams will now break until December 5, 6 and 7 when they host their own Calvin Invitational at the Venema Aquatic Center.
