Box Score Information

Calvin hit the double-digit plateau in victories in dramatic fashion on Saturday, upsetting regionally-ranked Trine 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Mandy Johnson drove in the winning run with a one-out single to right that scored junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) from third base with the winning run.

Trine took an early 3-0 lead, scoring single runs in the first, second and fourth innings before Calvin came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to centerfield by VanRooyen. In the fifth, Calvin freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS) led off with a home run down the left field line to cut the Trine lead to 3-2. Fri drove in another run on a single up the middle in the sixth to tie the game 3-3 but the visiting Thunder (19-9 overall, 9-5 MIAA) came back with a run in the top of the seventh on a homerun down the left field line by Tara Sipperly.

Trailing 4-3, Calvin mounted a seventh inning rally as sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached base on an error and move to second on the errant throw. VandenAkker then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored moments later on a second wild pitch to tie the game. VanRooyen followed with a single up the middle and moved to third on another Trine error, setting up Johnson’s walk-off heroics.

Calvin reaped the benefits of seven Trine errors in the win as three of Calvin’s five runs were unearned. Meanwhile, Calvin freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) had a superb outing, striking out a (collegiate) career-high 12 batters while scattering eight hits.

In game two, Trine bounced back for a 14-0 victory behind a 14-hit attack. The Thunder scored two runs in the second, four in the third and eight in the fourth to put the game away. Calvin (10-19 overall, 5-7 MIAA) had just one hit, a single off the bat of sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS).

Mast now had 143 strikeouts on the season in 154.1 innings of work. Calvin how has seven homeruns on the season with three coming off the bat of freshman Hannah DeWeerd, two from Fri and one each from VanRooyen and VandenAkker.

Calvin returns to action next Tuesday, hosting Goshen in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
