After a pair of tough losses against St. Mary’s on Thursday in its conference opener, Calvin opened up its home portion of the conference schedule Saturday against Albion in a doubleheader. Albion took both games from the Knights, winning 3-0 and 3-1.
In game one, Calvin got off to a rough start as the Britons scored a run in the top of the first on an error by the Knights defense.
In the bottom of the second, sophomore Lina Avila led of the Calvin at-bat with a double. Freshman Sarah Weiss came in to pinch run for Avila, and on a dropped pitch by the catcher, attempted to steal third but was tagged out. The Knights threat would end there, and Calvin left the inning without a run.
Albion tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Avila started off the inning with another double, this off the top of the left field fence. Avila then advanced to third on an infield grounder as Calvin surrendered the out. A fly ball and a grounder to the first baseman later, Calvin used up its final two outs as Albion secured the 3-0 victory.
In game two, Albion once again jumped out to an early lead, grabbing two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Another run in the third inning gave the Britons a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Calvin grabbed a run on some aggressive base running by Catherine Hilbrands, taking home on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, lead-off batter Lina Avila hit a ball over the left field fence, but just foul. With two outs, freshman Trista Brownlee reached first on a hit into right field. That would be as close as Calvin came to scoring runs, however, as Albion made the final out and wrapped up the sweep with the 3-1 second game victory.
“I think we’re doing some little things right, we’re doing some little things wrong, and its making the difference in the games,” said Head Coach Sharon DeKleine.
Calvin now looks forward to Wednesday when it will travel to Trinity Christian College to face the Trolls in a pair of non-conference games.
