ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin softball squad suffered a tough loss at the hands of the Trine Thunder on Friday.
Lina Avila and Sass VanRooyen recorded the Knights’ lone two hits. Avila’s double came in the fourth inning with two outs. From there, Calvin was unable to advance her.
In the sixth inning, Calvin put three runners on, with Becca Jarvis, Heather Sanderson, and Avila all reaching base. Once again, however, the Knights left their baserunners stranded and were unable to score a run.
VanRooyen reached base on a triple to right field in the bottom of the seventh. She was then caught stealing home, making for the game’s final out.
The Knights fell by a score of 4-0 with all of the Thunder’s runs coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. Andi Gasco drew a walk to start the inning and was advanced to second after a hit batter. Casey Baker’s single to right field scored a run. Trine would pick up still two more runs before HDaniels’ single scored another run to give the Thunder a 4-0 lead.
The loss dropped Calvin starter Shelby Mast to 3-13, though she struck out seven batters. Gasco earned the win, improving her record to 13-6.
In game two, Trine collected 15 hits in gaining a 13-0 win over the Knights. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd had two of Calvin’s four hits including a double. Avila (1-8) took the loss in the pitching circle for the Knights.
Calvin will close out the season on Saturday, hosting Saint Mary’s in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
