Softball Swept at Saint Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, IN – Calvin suffered a pair of hard-luck defeats at Saint Mary’s Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 7-5 in the MIAA opening games for the Knights.
In game one, Saint Mary’s (15-7 overall, 2-2 MIAA) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the win. Calvin had two runners aboard in the sixth but could not score. In the top of the seventh, Calvin placed runners on first and third with one out but again failed to score. In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Mary’s used a single, a Calvin error and then a double to bring home the game-winning run. Sophomore Lina Avila (2-7) took the loss, striking out two and walking one while scattering six hits.
In game two, Calvin (5-13 overall, 0-2 MIAA) and Saint Mary’s were tied 4-4 headed into the fifth inning but the host Belles scored three times in the top of the fifth to build a 7-4 lead.
Calvin took an early 1-0 lead in the first as freshman Merin Cok walked and scored on a double by Lina Avila. The RBI was the 24th of the year for Avila.
Saint Mary’s came back with two runs in the second and two more in the fourth to build a 4-1 lead. Calvin answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Christie VanderMeer drove in one run on a fielder’s choice and Cok delivered two more with a bases-loaded single to center.
In the fifth, the Belles scored one run on a wild pitch and then added two more unearned runs to take a 7-4 advantage. Calvin was able to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by freshman Catherine Hillbrands but could not score after that.
Freshman Trista Brownlee (3-7) took the loss for Calvin. Calvin had six hits in defeat including two off the bat of Hillbrands.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
