ALMA - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at conference rival Alma, falling 4-3 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap with the second game limited to five innings because of the mercy rule. Wednesday’s twinbill marked the conference openers for both teams.
In game one, Calvin carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning but the Scots scored two runs on three hits and a hit batter in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Alma (15-5 overall, 2-0 MIAA) then kept Calvin off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to hang on for the win.
Calvin grabbed an early 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the top of the second keyed by junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) who reached base on an error and later scored on a double-steal. Freshman Aubree Thompson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also reached base on a fielder’s choice and later scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids Christian HS). In the top of the third, VanRooyen drove in senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) from second base with an RBI single.
Alma came back with two runs in the bottom of the third and then added two in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams had six hits with VanRooyen and sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) collecting two hits apiece for the Knights. Sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a double for Calvin.
Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss for Calvin in game one, striking out three and walking two in six innings of work.
In game two, Alma collected 10 hits and scored four runs in the first and four more in the third to pull away for the win. Calvin had two hits with Prins and DeWeerd credited with one hit apiece. Mast took the loss to fall to 4-4 on the season.
Calvin (4-5 overall, 0-2 MIAA) is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Olivet for a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
